Best built car in hill climb racing2/20/2024 ![]() ![]() ![]() Over 12.4 miles, the race route describes 156 turns and already starts at 9,390 feet. Gravel or pavement, this is one of the highest, most challenging roads to drive in the world, let alone to race. Paving also forever changed the character of the race, Snow says. "Don't forget, we're not part of any other series, so it's very hard to bring a car here designed for rally or pavement, Baja or NASCAR and get the car just right." That's in part because unlike even road courses in other series, where drivers get a week's worth of practice, at Pikes Peak there are only four practice mornings, including race day, since this is a public road, owned by the US Forest Service. He says in 2006, the PPIHC nearly went under because so few drivers wanted to risk racing. "That nearly killed the race," Snow says, because it was impossible for racers to properly anticipate how to set up their cars. Rather than paving from the bottom to the top, sections were paved here and there. Nearly 400 horsepower in a 2400-pound, open-top, manual-transmission car is a great recipe.Mitch Snow, Director of Promotions and Legacy for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC), says the craziest part about the paving project, which was completed in 2011, was that it was done haphazardly. We can only imagine what this thing is like to drive. Just one example was built, painted white and green in tribute to the original, experimental 909 Bergspyder. ![]() In addition, Porsche estimates the Bergspyder is capable of sprinting 0-62 mph in a little over four seconds, and lapping the Nürburgring in 7:30.Īmazingly, Porsche actually considered putting this design into production, but understandably, there were concerns over the difficulty of making such a car road legal. Porsche says the Boxster Bergspyder weighs just 2422 pounds-478 pounds lighter than the already svelte Boxster Spyder. Much of the interior components came from the 918 Spyder-note the tach with the Bergspyder logo taped on-and the 3.8-liter flat-six and six-speed manual are the same as those used in the Cayman GT4. ![]() A small plexiglass wind deflector was installed in front of the driver, as was a new rear decklid that extends all the way forward to cover the passenger's seat. According to Porsche, the engineers started with a then-new 2015 Boxster Spyder and took out as much stuff as possible-notably, the windshield, the folding fabric roof, around half of the interior, and even the exterior doorhandles. ![]()
